Childbirth Can Trigger Post-Traumatic Stress

Labor and childbirth can trigger post-traumatic stress symptoms usually associated with war or other violence, psychologists in Britain said.

They suspect that up to 3% of mothers may suffer from fear, anxiety, recurrent nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and flashbacks weeks after the birth, especially if the pregnancy was unwanted or the woman feared for her own safety.

The symptoms can be severe enough to deter some women from having more children.
