TRAIL Gene and Cisplatin Effective Against Breast Cancer

TRAIL gene therapy combined with a cisplatin-based chemotherapy regimen is effective against hormone and drug resistant breast carcinoma cells, reported researchers from the United States.

"TRAIL (also called Apo2L), belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family, activates rapid apoptosis in tumor cells," noted K. Rutgers Son and colleagues from the State University of New Jersey, USA. "Unlike other cytokines such as TNF and Fas ligand, TRAIL is a cytokine inducing apoptosis selectively in tumor [cells] and is devoid of systemic toxicity in mice."
