Women Have Longer Hospital Stays after Heart Surgery

Scientists at Wake Forest University Medical School report that women are more likely to remain intubated and incur longer lengths of stays (LOS) in the hospital after undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.

J. Butterworth and associates included male and female patients undergoing coronary artery surgery in 1995 (n=1,064) and 1997 (n=910) at 51 academic health centers in their study ("Female gender associates with increased duration of intubation and length of stay after coronary artery surgery," Anesthesiology, 2000;92(2):414-424).
