Growth Factor Concentration Not Correlated to Metastases, Disease Recurrence

Although certain growth factors are considered to be responsible for angiogenesis, and ultimately to the development of tumors, recent study findings showed that such factors were not correlated with the incidence of metastases and recurrence.

Neovascularization is correlated to the chance of metastasis and recurrence in breast cancer and ovarian and cervical cancer, study findings have shown. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), flt-1, and KDR/flk-1 are considered to be markers of vascular proliferation. VEGF regulates tumor angiogenesis in the endometrium, noted B.A. Fine and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
