Pamidronate Therapy Reduces Skeletal Complications in Metastatic Breast Cancer

The drug pamidronate can reduce pain and complications resulting from breast cancer with bone metastases, say researchers. A. Lipton and colleagues at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania studied 751 women with Stage IV breast carcinoma and osteolytic metastases randomized to either a placebo or a 90-mg intravenous pamidronate dose every three to four weeks, according to their report ("Pamidronate prevents skeletal complications and is effective palliative treatment in women with breast carcinoma and osteolytic bone metastases - Long term follow-up of two randomized, placebo-controlled trials," Cancer, 2000;88(5):1082-1090). ...
