Psychologically Abused Women Experience Significant Physical and Mental Health Problems

Women experiencing psychological intimate partner violence were more likely to report poor physical and mental health than women who were not abused, according to an article in the May 2000 issue of the Archives of Family Medicine.

Ann L. Coker, PhD, University of South Carolina, and colleagues studied 1,152 women between 18 and 65 years of age to estimate the prevalence of intimate partner violence by type and associated physical health consequences among women seeking primary health care. The authors believe this is the first study to consider the physical health consequences of psychological forms of intimate partner abuse.
