Reduced Hematological Parameters in Newborns Tied to Maternal Smoking

Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with lower hemoglobin levels and a reduced number of red blood cells in the newborn. The more cigarettes the mother smokes per day, the greater is the reduction of the hematological parameters in the child.

Anne-Lise Bjorke-Monsen, pediatrician at the University of Bergen, Norway, and her colleagues have studied the effect of maternal smoking on newborns at term and after six weeks of life.
