Evaluation of Radiotherapy Indicates Long-Term Effects are Uncertain

The long-term effects of radiotherapy on mortality from breast cancer and other causes remain uncertain.

A re-analysis (meta-analysis), published in The Lancet examines the results of 10- and 20-year follow-up from 40 unconfounded randomized trials of radiotherapy for early breast cancer (Lancet, 2000; 355(9217):1739, 1757).

The study, done by the Early Breast Cancer Trialists' Collaborative Group, involved data from 20,000 patients concerning recurrence and cause-specific mortality; half of the population had "node-positive" disease.
