Home Pregnancy Tests Keep Youths Away from Health Clinics

Some 34% of sexually active adolescents use home pregnancy tests, a practice that may keep them away from health care clinics that provide important pregnancy prevention information and reliable pregnancy testing, according to a study in the June 2000 issue of American Journal of Public Health.

A survey was given to 600 girls aged 13 to 19 years in 11 urban clinics in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.

Of the home pregnancy test users, 77% of them had received at least one negative test result, almost half (48%) took no further action for confirmation and less than one-third told a parent or another adult.
