Since obesity among women at the pre-pregnancy stage has been linked to neural tube defects (NTD) and spina bifida in particular, G.M. Shaw and colleagues with the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation in Emeryville, California, conducted a study to determine the degree of risk for different types of spina bifida due to obesity and other factors ("Spina bifida phenotypes in infants or fetuses of obese mothers," Teratology, 2000;61(5):376-381).
