Increased Risk Associated with Oral Contraceptive Use, Despite Low-Estrogen Preparations

Risk of ischemic stroke is increased among current users of oral contraceptives (OC), although the absolute effect on stroke risk with current dosages is small, according to an article in the July 5 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

S. Claiborne Johnston, MD, MPH, and colleagues from the University of California, San Francisco, reviewed 16 previously published studies to determine whether OC use is associated with increased stroke risk.

The investigators found current OC use was associated with a relative risk of ischemic stroke 2.75 times that of nonusers. Smaller estrogen dosages were associated with lower risk but...
