Mitochondrial Disease Can be Byproduct of Zidovudine During Pregnancy

Zidovudine (ZDV) treatment during pregnancy of HIV infected women may damage fetal mitochondria, researchers in Italy reported.

"Mitochondrial disease is a possible side effect of ZDV-treated HIV positive patients," suggested P.-A. Tovo and colleagues from the University of Turin and the Neurological Institute, Italy. "The underlying pathogenetic mechanism is due to the inhibitory effect of ZDV on the activity of DNA polymerase gamma, the key enzyme of mtDNA replication."
