Study: Most Cases Detected by Transvaginal Ultrasonography Screening are Curable

A 10-year study featured in the August 1, 2000, issue of the journal Cancer indicates that the use of transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) screening for ovarian carcinoma may significantly enhance the opportunity for early diagnosis and decrease the mortality rate of the disease.

Additionally, risk factors for ovarian cancer were identified in this study, including obesity, infertility, and family history of obesity or breast or endometrial cancer.

Shigemi Sato, MD, of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hirosaki University School of Medicine in Japan, and his colleagues noted that 77.3% of the primary ovarian tumors detected during TVS...
