Rates for Asian American and U.S. Pacific Islander Women Well Below U.S. Guidelines

Breast and cervical carcinoma screening rates for six subgroups of Asian American and U.S. Pacific Islander (AAPI) women are well below those for white women, and well below U.S. national goals and guidelines, finds a new study in the August 1, 2000, issue of Cancer.

Additionally, lack of insurance, low income, and lack of a usual source of medical care had a significantly greater negative impact on screening rates for AAPIs compared with white women facing the same problems.

Authors Marjorie Kagawa-Singer, PhD, MN, RN, and Nadereh Pourat, PhD, of the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Public Health said their findings indicate...
