Appalachian Women May Have Lower Breast Carcinoma Mortality Rate

Women in the Appalachian Region of the U.S. experience lower overall breast carcinoma mortality compared with women who live elsewhere in the U.S., according to a study published in the October 1, 2000, issue of Cancer.

The study, conducted by H. Irene Hall, PhD, and associates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, also found that overall cervical carcinoma mortality in Appalachian women is higher than in other U.S. women, a discovery that is consistent with prior reports.
