Home Care Or Hospital: Differences For Women Experiencing Pre-Term Labor

A study conducted by researchers in Canada found only one difference between women experiencing pre-term labor who are cared for at home and those who are hospitalized until delivery: the women at home tended to return home sooner following birth of their child in hospital.

Whether women should be admitted to hospital as the result of an episode of acute premature labor or sent home with medication and instruction to limit physical activity has been the cause of much debate, particularly in this era of rationed health care services. In current practice in Canada, women admitted for control of preterm labor tend to stay in hospital.
