Hormone Replacement Therapy Improves Glycemic Control After Menopause

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Hormone replacement therapy is associated with lower HbA1c levels in postmenopausal women, researchers at Kaiser Permanente have found.

"Little is known about how hormone replacement therapy (HRT) affects glucose metabolism in diabetes," noted A. Ferrara and colleagues working in the Northern California region, who proposed that glycemic control in women with diabetes may be further diminished by the hormonal changes of menopause.

Ferrara and associates recorded HbA1c and HRT status for 15,435 women with type 2 diabetes who were members of the Kaiser Permanente health maintenance...
