Difference in P450 gene seen in lean women

by Lindsay Edmunds, PhD, ELS, senior medical writer - Endocrine measurements in lean, nonsmoking women suggest that the aromatase gene might play in role in body fat regulation.

Researchers at Gothenburg University, Sweden, studied 270 nonsmoking premenpausal 40-year-old women to try to determine what physiologic and psychological factors were associated with the ability to maintain a lean body weight.

Compared with the other women, the lean women in this group had higher levels of 17beta-estradiol and lower levels of androgens and dihydroepiandrosterone sulfate, but there were no differences between the groups in levels of insulin-like growth factor...
