Prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy reduces risk

by Lynn Yoffee, senior medical writer - Researchers have shown, for the first time, that women who face an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer because of mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can reduce their risk of these cancers if they have prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy.

Compared with intensive ovarian screening, surgery to remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes reduced the risk of subsequent breast and ovarian cancers by 75%.
