Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

Serum VEGF binding reduced in OHSS patients

Results of a small study indicate that women with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) have less of a particular protein that binds to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) than women who do not have the condition.

B. McElhinney and colleagues, Queens University Belfast, North Ireland, collected serum from five patients who underwent controlled ovarian hyperstimulation as part of an in vitro fertilization cycle and who developed severe OHSS, and from five control subjects.

The serum, explained the researchers, "collected at the time of oocyte retrieval, was incubated with radioactive VEGF (I-125-VEGF(165)) for 2 hours before being passed down...
