HIV/AIDS Prevention



Nonoxynol-9 does not prevent HIV infection

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - A commonly used spermicidal agent does not prevent HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases, researchers in Australia warn.

David Wilkinson and colleagues at the University of South Australia in Adelaide performed a study to "determine the effectiveness of the vaginally administered spermicide nonoxynol-9 (N-9) among women for the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)."

N-9 did not have a significant effect on the risk of HIV or other STIs, Wilkinson and coauthors found.
