ACOG advises screening all pregnant women

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has issued new recommendations calling for universal screening of pregnant women for group B streptococci (GBS), a leading cause of illness and death among newborns in the United States. Previously, ACOG and other experts had recommended two options for identifying women with GBS: either a culture screening at 35-37 weeks of pregnancy or assessment of clinical risk factors at the time of labor.
