Angiogenic protein links SIDS to earlier oxygen reduction

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Medical collaborators from across the U.S. have concluded a protein often associated with cancer proliferation can be identified in the cerebrospinal fluid of infants who die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

The protein is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In recent years, scientists have studied VEGF for its influence on vessel growth in tumors and other diseases. They have learned that in the presence of hypoxia, or limited oxygen, VEGF levels rise. Now, medical investigators from several institutes across the U.S. have reported hypoxia, as indicated by a rise in VEGF levels in the cerebrospinal fluid...
