Union Pacific women sue for coverage

Three Union Pacific workers have filed a class-action lawsuit, claiming the railroad company discriminates by not providing contraceptive coverage.

The suit, backed by Planned Parenthood and filed in U.S. District Court, alleges that Union Pacific's action violates the federal Civil Rights Act, which prohibits employers with 15 or more workers from making decisions based on gender or pregnancy.

"This is a very basic health care need that women need for well over 2 decades of their lives," said Roberta Riley, a Planned Parenthood lawyer in Seattle. "Union Pacific benefits are very generous for every other conceivable condition imaginable."
