Women who reduce sedentary behaviors reduce risk for diabetes, obesity

A new study from the Harvard School of Public Health finds that women who avoid sedentary behaviors such as watching television more than 10 hours per week and incorporate a 30-minute brisk walk into their day, reduce the risk of onset of type 2 diabetes by 43% and obesity by 30% compared to women with sedentary lifestyles.

The findings appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Using data from the Nurses' Health Study, the researchers assessed the physical activity and sedentary behaviors of more than 68,000 women over a span of 6 years and the relationship to onset of type 2 diabetes and obesity. At the start of the study the...
