Training mothers in developing countries to breastfeed for 6 months has health benefits

Reducing diarrheal disease among infants in less-developed countries could be assisted by the implementation of straightforward community-based health programs to promote exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months after childbirth, conclude authors of a new study.

The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age for infants in less-developed countries; previous research has suggested that exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months can protect against diarrheal disease, although there are concerns that exclusive breastfeeding could be associated with reduced infant growth.
