Lamivudine reduces hepatitis B virus vertical transmission risk

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Lamivudine therapy may reduce vaccination breakthrough in the infants of mothers who have high hepatitis B virus viremia.

The therapy should be administered during the last month of an infected woman's pregnancy, according to M. van Zonneveld and colleagues, who work at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.

"Vertical transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) can occur occasionally despite vaccination of the child. This vaccination breakthrough has been associated with high maternal viremia," noted van Zonneveld and coauthors.
