Late-term exposure to SSRIs may cause neurological symptoms in babies

Infants whose mothers took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs; drugs used to treat some psychiatric disorders) during late pregnancy are at an increased risk for having neurologic adverse effects linked to the drugs during the first weeks of life, researchers in Finland report.

Mood and anxiety disorders such as depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder are common in women during child-bearing years, according to the researchers' paper in the July 2003 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
