Can healthy bones help prevent metastasis?

Bones are the most common place in the body where breast cancer spreads, or metastasizes. Physicians at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are studying the drug clodronate to see if it can prevent cancer from spreading and developing in the bones.

Similar studies have been conducted in Europe with promising results (e.g., Diel et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 1998;339:357-63). The drug is approved for this indication in Canada, but not the U.S.

"We believe that cancer can spread easier and develop in bones that are damaged," said Mary Cianfrocco, DO, a medical oncologist at Fox Chase and principal investigator of this study....
