Premature babies at increased risk of contracting RSV disease

Between 1981 and 2001, the annual rate of premature births soared more than 27% (from 9.4% to 11.0%), and an elevated risk for contracting serious respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease is one of the many, but least known, health problems that premature children face.

RSV is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infection in children younger than 5 years and the number one reason for hospitalization of children younger than 1 year.

In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year up to 125,000 children younger than 5 years are hospitalized with serious RSV disease. RSV season is from fall through spring...
