Vitamin A supplements have little effect on vertical HIV transmission risk

Vitamin A supplements provide little if any protection against vertical HIV transmission - and in some cases may actually increase transmission risk.

In a recent study from the United States, "the role of maternal vitamin A supplements in decreasing the risk of mother-to-child HIV transmission" was examined in sub-Saharan Africa."

"Overall, there is no reduction in either mortality or HIV transmission in two recent studies," reported C.B. Stephensen and coauthors at the University of California-Davis.

In fact, "contrary to expectations, one study reported an increased risk of transmission using vitamin A plus beta-carotene...
