Teen birthrate drops 7% in Arkansas

Continuing a pattern of sharp decline, the Arkansas teenage birthrate dropped again in 2002, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The birthrate for teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 19 was 6% in 2003, down 7% from 2002. Medical officials and child advocates point to better access to birth control and promotion of abstinence for the sharp drop.

Arkansas has seen the teen birthrate fall 25% since 1991. About 60 out of every 1,000 Arkansas teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 19 gave birth during 2002, the survey showed.
