Long-term study suggests vitamin D may help reduce older women's risk

Calcium supplements have become a staple for women eager to ward off osteoporosis and other diseases associated with aging. Vitamin D also plays an important role in bone metabolism. What's more, it may have effects on the immune system that influence the likelihood of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

This is according to study findings published in the January 2004 print issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism, and online January 9, 2004, via Wiley Interscience (www.interscience.wiley.com/arthritisandrheumatism).
