Drug significantly reduces vertebral fracture risk in postmenopausal women

Results of a major new study show that a novel treatment for osteoporosis, Protelos (S12911, strontium ranelate), significantly reduces the risk of new vertebral fractures in osteoporotic postmenopausal women.

The study data on Protelos, manufactured by Servier Laboratories Ltd., were published in the January 29, 2004, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (N Engl J Med, 2004;350:459-468). The lead author of the paper is Pierre J. Meunier, MD, Department of Rheumatology and Bone Diseases, Edouard Herriot Hospital, Lyons, France.
