Embolization offers faster recovery, fewer adverse events than myomectomy

Data from the first large, multi-center, comparative trial show that uterine fibroid embolization offers a much quicker recovery and a lower adverse event rate compared to myomectomy, the surgical removal of uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive interventional radiology treatment that blocks the blood supply to the fibroid tumors, causing them to shrink.

The study, sponsored by Boston Scientific and presented at the 29th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society of Interventional Radiology held March 24-27, 2004, found that the UFE patients were back to work in 10 days versus 37 days for the myomectomy group, and...
