IVF, ICSI miscarriages show high incidence of chromosomal abnormalities

When a patient who has become pregnant as a result of an assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure loses her baby, it can be helpful in planning her future course of treatment to try to figure out what might have led to the loss.

A study published by researchers from Stanford in the May 2004 issue of Fertility and Sterility found that 59% of miscarried in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) fetuses were cytogenetically abnormal (Rate of aneuploidy in miscarriages following in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Fertil Steril, 2004;81(5):1270-1272).
