Amniocentesis, CVS tests decline despite increase in number of older mothers

The number of pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) to help detect fetal chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome declined more than 50% between 1991 and 2002, despite the increasing number of pregnant women aged 35 and older, according to a study in the June 2004 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Although there has been a decline in the number of these two procedures, the number of Down syndrome fetuses detected has increased, mostly due to advances in other non-invasive screening techniques, including nuchal translucency measurement, first- and second-trimester maternal serum screening tests, and second-trimester...
