Thai program saves thousands of unborn infants from HIV

For Malee, a doe-eyed villager, pregnancy was a time of torment, of living in dread that she would pass on her virulent disease to not one but the two babies growing in her womb.

But today, Malee says she's the happiest woman on earth. Her twins were born October 8, 2003, free of the AIDS virus that she is afflicted with.

Her savior, and that of twins Phet and Nakhorn, is a Thai national program that is winning international accolades and acolytes for preventing transmission of HIV from mothers to thousands of children since its start in 2000.
