High treatment costs, stigma prevent women in Zambia from seeking care

In western countries where treatment for breast cancer is easily accessible, the disease still has lifelong effect on women. Imagine, then, living with breast cancer in Lusaka, Zambia, where the high cost of treatment and a common belief that the disease is linked to witchcraft prevents women from seeking care.

According to Breast Cancer Trust chairperson Maureen Lewanika, most women in the area associate breast cancer with witchcraft.
