Africa: Efforts to prevent unsafe abortions fall short, especially for HIV+

Despite efforts to improve sexual and reproductive health across Africa, a new study has shown that over 4 million women undergo unsafe abortions each year and 34,000 of them die as a result, reported the UN Integrated Regional Information Networks on July 21, 2004 (www.irin.org).

In a recently released report, Ipas, an international women's health nongovernmental organization, noted that 10 years after a landmark UN population conference in Cairo, Egypt, women in Africa continued to face "elevated risks" of dying from pregnancy-related causes, with unsafe abortion posing a particularly dangerous threat.
