Women, children's poverty levels rising in U.S., insurance coverage declining

An analysis by the National Women's Law Center (NWLC) in the of new U.S. Census numbers released August 26, 2004, shows that women were hit especially hard by the sluggish job market and cutbacks in health insurance coverage in 2004.

The data reveal women's poverty rate increasing for a third straight year; the jump in child poverty over the past year was the largest in a decade. As women's incomes fell while men's incomes remained stagnant, the wage gap increased. Health insurance coverage declined even more sharply among women than men.
