Screening, care strategies needed for pregnant women with type 2 diabetes

The alarming increase in type 2 diabetes worldwide may result in increased attention to maternal and fetal effects of the disease during pregnancy. At least a group of reproductive endocrinologists in France hopes so.

According to their paper in a recent issue of Diabetes & Metabolism, "The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in women of childbearing age leads to an increasing number of pregnant women with type 2 diabetes. Pregnancy complicated by type 2 diabetes is a high-risk pregnancy, associated with birth defects and high perinatal mortality to the same extent as in type 1 diabetes.
