Rhode Island gets $5 million grant to improve healthcare system

Rhode Island has been awarded a $5 million federal grant to develop a system that will allow healthcare providers to access comprehensive patient information by computer.

Under the system, doctors will be able to access patients' computerized files to check their medication and other information. The information would be shared among hospitals, physicians and others. Patients would need to authorize the retrieval of any information.

"This will improve the quality of care, ensure the confidentiality of patient information, and produce cost savings for Rhode Island's healthcare system," said Governor Don Carcieri.
