Discontinuing epidural in final stages of labor yields more pain, no gain

The practice of discontinuing epidural pain relief in the latter stages of labor is widespread, as is the belief that this practice reduces the incidence of instrument-assisted delivery.

A recent review of the available evidence, however, indicates otherwise. The study, titled "Discontinuation of epidural analgesia late in labour for reducing the adverse delivery outcomes associated with epidural analgesia," was published in The Cochrane Library newsletter (Issue 4, 2004).
