Several previous studies have suggested that women have a higher risk of surgical wound infections after heart surgery. Since it is known that women are treated less aggressively for heart disease than men, an important question is whether differences in risk of infection are seen simply because the women who actually get heart surgery have more medical problems that predispose them to infections than men who get heart surgery.
