California social services announces 'surrendered baby' awareness campaign

The California Department of Social Services announced a joint outreach effort with Safeway to heighten community awareness about California's Safely Surrendered Baby (SSB) law, which is also referred to as the Safe Haven law.

Beginning November 1 and continuing throughout the holiday season, grocery bags in Safeway stores will feature the SSB logo and a toll-free number to call for more information.

The SSB law is designed to provide an alternative for desperate parents, while attempting to save newborns at risk of abandonment. A parent or person with lawful custody can safely surrender their newborn baby within the first 72 hours of birth to any...
