Family history predicts young women's risk of stroke

Young women with a family history of stroke in their parents or siblings may be at increased risk for stroke themselves, according to a new report. The risk of a blocked vessel stroke increases nearly twofold in young women with a history of stroke in any first-degree relative, Helen Kim, PhD, of the University of Washington and colleagues conclude in the December 2004 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The researchers also found a 2.4-fold increase in the risk of ruptured-vessel stroke among women with a family history of the vascular disease.
