Birth rates for U.S. women aged 40-44 rose in 2003

Preliminary birth data indicate that the birth rate for women in the United States aged 40-44 increased in 2003 while the rate for women aged 45-54 remain unchanged, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report shows that birth rates for women aged 40-44 rose 5% between 2002 and 2003 from 8.3 to 8.7 births per 1,000 women. The rate for women aged 45-54 remained unchanged at 0.5. This is the first time that births to women over 40 topped 100,000 in a single year.
