Cancer drug risk equal for black, white women

Women who take tamoxifen to combat breast cancer have about the same benefits and risks whether they are black or white, according to a U.S. study on the effects of the cancer drug. In the study appearing this week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers analyzed data from 13 tamoxifen clinical studies involving more than 20,000 women and compared the outcomes for black and white women. Little difference was found between the races. Among women diagnosed with cancer in one breast, between 2% and 15% will develop cancer in the other, or contralateral, breast.
