Geographic distribution of resistant uropathogenic E. coli in U.S. outlined

University of Minnesota researchers have identified a west-to-east descending prevalence gradient of resistant Escherichia coli phenotypes in the United States in women with acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis. In their study, "the susceptibility to 12 antimicrobial agents of 165 Escherichia coli isolates from women with acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis of mild to moderate severity was analyzed by geographic region in the U.S." M.R. Sannes and colleagues determined that "ampicillin, trimethoprim, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole resistance exhibited a descending prevalence gradient from west to east.
